Illegal eviction
Usman and his family had struggled to find a home in London. Eventually, they ended up renting a flat with just two rooms between all five of them. It was tough, but they were managing to cope.
Then, after a year, their landlord started to harass them. He said they had to leave but refused to give an official eviction notice. His threats continued to the point that Usman worried for his family’s safety. Due to the constant stress, they packed up their belongings – including their youngest child’s teddy – and came to us for help.
Because it was an illegal eviction, they’d not actually been made homeless according to the letter of the law. We immediately advocated for them and told the council we were concerned about how vulnerable they were with three small children. Usman and his family were placed in emergency accommodation while a housing assessment was carried out.
Unfortunately, Usman’s immigration status meant his family were deemed ineligible for housing. We knew Usman had been living and working in the UK for years and his children went to the local school. So we gathered all the information we could find and put together a case. After several nervous days and nights, the decision was overturned and they were offered suitable temporary accommodation.
After their ordeal, we’re delighted to say that Usman and his family are now settled and happy in their new home across London. The three children are all back in school and the family are moving on with their lives.
