Jakob suffered a stroke while homeless, but even that couldn’t stop him
After renting a place in Haringey for almost 5 years, Jakob was evicted by his landlord. Shortly after, he suffered a stroke.
Homeless, while trying to deal with limited mobility and memory loss, Jakob spent several nights sleeping rough on a park bench during a particularly cold spell.
When he arrived at our Day Centre, we contacted the local outreach team straight away. While they sorted out emergency accommodation, we gave him provisions including food and a new sleeping bag.
Jakob had always worked in the UK and had never applied for benefits. He didn’t know if he was eligible for any help or how to navigate the system. We supported him in getting a letter from his GP and helped him apply for Disability Allowance.
Life after the stroke is an ongoing challenge for Jakob. His mobility and memory remain an issue for him. He still visits our centre often and the council have accepted responsibility to house him. We’re now helping him find a new, more suitable home.
