Eviction has no compassion
Janet had been working as a live-in carer looking after an elderly lady. But when the lady sadly passed away, Janet was asked to leave. She had no other home to go to.
A friend had been kind enough to let Janet store her belongings in their garage. Janet had no choice but to ask to sleep there as well. As a woman in her 60s who had always worked and never claimed benefits, the impact on her physical and mental health was dramatic. When she came to us, she was struggling to come to terms with everything that had happened to her.
Janet was determined to start working again, but she was finding it more and more difficult to attend interviews. She revealed to us that she had developed severe arthritis.
We worked closely with her to complete a Personal Independence Payment and Universal Credit application, as well as a homeless application with Enfield Council. It took a long time, but eventually she found a property that suited her needs.
Janet moved in but she didn’t have enough money for even the most basic essentials. We bought her some bedding, a microwave and a walking stick to help with her mobility. A few months on, we’re made up to say that she is now happily settled in her flat and knows she can come back to us for support any time she needs.
